Carpet Cleaning Q & A

Carpets can be hard to maintain.  However, proper care prevents damage to your carpet and keeps it looking great for years.  Here are some answers to questions you may have.

Q:  Does it make a difference if I wear shoes in my home?  Will it ruin my carpeting?

A:  Sand and dirt are collected under your shoes, which can potentially damage your carpet by grinding away fibers.  It is not any better if you walk bare feet in your home, as the oils from your feet dirty the carpet as well.  Wear either socks or slippers to prevent this from happening.

Q:  Is it safe to use liquid carpet shampoos for carpet cleaning?

A:  Using liquid shampoo for carpet cleaning may not be beneficial because it cannot be completely rinsed out.  A sticky residue is usually left behind and makes it easier for your carpet to attract dirt.  The best solution is to use dry carpet cleaners.  Carpet cleaners can be found in stores that sell vacuum cleaners.

Q:  What do I use to remove stains?

A:  Depending on the stain, there are various techniques you can use.  Be careful to NEVER rub the stain.  Rubbing will only spread your stain to other areas of your carpet.  Always blot the area with a clean white towel.

  • Most food stains can be removed with shaving cream.  Let it set for 15 minutes before rinsing it with a vinegar and water solution.

  • Red wine stains can be removed with club soda.

  • Try using an enzyme product to remove pet stains.  Pour enough onto the carpet to cover an area twice as large as the stain so that any urine that has spread will be covered.  Let it sit for a couple of hours.  Enzyme products can be found in pet stores.

  • Ink can be removed with rubbing alcohol.  Blot on and allow it to set for 30 minutes before blotting to remove it.

  • Gum can be frozen with ice cubes and cut away with a knife.

A few things to keep in mind:

  • Most carpet cleaning products are relatively safe to use, but some do contain toxic chemicals.

  • The less frequently you clean your carpets, the stronger the cleaning products you will need when you do your carpet cleaning.

  • Using the wrong products or too many products can easily damage your carpet.

  • Hiring a professional carpet cleaner to do the job will take care of your carpeting needs and save you the money of replacing your carpets.
