Kitchen & Baths Design

Kitchens have three main conventional functions: storage, preparation, and cooking.  However, for many families, the kitchen is also a place for the family to gather, so designing your kitchen to fit your lifestyle and serve your needs is important.  Other things you have to consider are if you have any pets or children, if you want an easy to clean kitchen, or if you are planning to dine in the kitchen.  Avoid any designs that could be hard to navigate around since the efficiency of your kitchen will depend greatly on how well it is laid out.

A kitchen can be any shape or size.  There are six basic layouts that can be used for developing a functional kitchen.

  • Single Galley Kitchen – all of the important areas are in a line on one side of the kitchen.  This will give you more floor space and everything is at easy reach.

  • Two-way Galley Kitchen – the main areas are on both sides of the kitchen.  This provides more storage space below the countertop.

  • L-shaped Kitchen – main area is shaped like an “L.”  This layout offers more flexibility in the location of the workspace.

  • U-shaped Kitchen – main area is shaped like a “U.”  This lay out provides maximum countertop and storage space.

  • Island Kitchen are only suitable for “L” and “U” shaped kitchens.  The island can be used for storage, a cooktop, or a sink.  This layout leaves more workspace on countertops.

Once you have chosen the layout, the next step is to choose the types of appliances, cabinets, counter-top, shelving lighting, and flooring you want to use.  All of these decisions are very important when finalizing your layout and list of materials.

Finally, hire a kitchen & baths contractor to help you with your job.  They can give you recommendations on the layout and designs you have chosen, as well as hire the right contractors for the installation process.  Also, they have access to more flooring, fabric, and furniture options than you may.
