Painting Preparations

Painting your house can add life to your home by changing the old, drab interior paint.  However, without careful planning, the results may be undesirable. Therefore, painting preparations are essential for every paint job, especially if you are on a budget. Making careful painting preparations can help you save a lot of time and money, as well as help you understand the options available for your painting project.

Painting Preparation Tips:

  1. Clear valuables out of areas you are painting so you do not destroy them.
  2. Clean and prepare your walls so that they will not affect the finished look of your paint job.
  3. Gather any materials you need so you can avoid stopping in the middle of a job.
  4. Determine the techniques you plan to use for painting each area. Consider doing the bigger jobs first and focus on the smaller details once you have finished.
  5. Decide how you will dispose of any leftover paint.

BEST Areas for Painting

  • Ceilings – paint two coats.  The first coat should be painted in the same direction as the light source and the second coat should be perpendicular to the light.
  • Doors – use an oil-base sealer and primer to keep the original finish, and then use two coats of semigloss or gloss paint.
  • Flooring – clean and sand the surface before applying an oil-base sealer.  Start in a corner and work toward your exit to avoid stepping on wet paint.
  • Walls – remove any wallpaper before painting.  Wash your walls with TSP (tri-sodium phosphate) and repair any cracks.  Then, apply at least two or three coats of paint.

WORST Areas for Painting

  • Bathtubs and sinks – some of the chemicals used are toxic and are hazardous if not handled correctly.
  • Kitchen countertops – putting standard paint on your countertops is not safe for food preparation.
  • Ceramic tiles in wet areas – water will break down the paint no matter how many times you repaint it.
