Have
Trouble Deciding How to Repair Your Roof?
Damage or
problems with your roof can deteriorate the structure of
your roof and start to affect the quality of your home.
Protect your investment by maintaining your roof. Are you
looking for roof repair solutions? Depending on
the type of roofing material on your home, you will need to
use different repair techniques and materials.
|
-
Metal Roofs –
are highly resistant to damage and
may last more than 40 years. If pieces are
damaged, find a piece of the same material to make a
patch. Cut a patch at least 2 inches larger than
the damaged area and fold the end under. Sand
folded parts and put flux on the patched area. Use
a soldering iron to heat the patch until it melts and
run under the patch. Finally, use roofing cement
to coat the area.
-
Wood Shingles –
are made of wood and are highly
rot-resistant, but may become brittle and offer less
protection when it ages. To repair any pieces,
carefully lift out as much wood as you can. Then
gently lift up the good piece of shingle so you can remove the
nails securing the damaged piece. Put a new
piece of shingle in and secure it with two roofing nails at an
angle. Put a wood block against the bottom of the
shingle and hammer it until the shingle is even with the
others.

Asphalt Shingles
– are the most commonly used and least expensive roofing
material. To repair shingles, begin by apply
roofing cement on the back of each shingle with a putty
knife. Then, press the pieces into position so it
sticks to the shingle beneath. Finally, hammer
nails along the repaired area to keep them in place.
-
Tile, Slate, and Composites
– are composed of either clay or
concrete. They are the longest lasting material
available and are extremely fire resistant. If
areas are damaged, chisel cracked mortar with a hammer
and remove the tiles carefully. Soak the tiles for
a few hours and place new mortar where you have removed
the old mortar. Put the tiles back into place and
clean up access mortar.
Roof repair requires extra care so that additional damages do
not occur. To prevent any further damages,
hire a roofing
contractor to do the job.
