Which Type of Siding Material is Best for Your Home?

Looking to improve your curb appeal?  Siding can increase the overall appearance of your home, while protecting it from different weather conditions from the exterior.   Since there are many different types and styles, deciding on which type works best for your home can be difficult.  You will have to do a bit of research to discover the advantages and disadvantages of each.  Here is a list of the types of siding material you can choose from:

Wooden Siding:

Clapboard – is one of the most common types of wood siding.  Usually consists of long, horizontal boards overlapping each other.  This type of material requires constant sanding and painting to keep it in good condition.

Planks – are excellent insulators and protect from moisture, but may need to be treated each year.

Plywood – are inexpensive and easy to install. This type of wood is susceptible to termite damage and may rot easily.

Shingles – are good insulators and easy to use.  They go up faster than other wood composites, but begin to warp after a few years of installation.  They can be treated to lengthen their lifespan.

Shakes – are good insulators and provide a more rustic look.  Like shingles, they will warp after a few years.

Metal and Steel Siding:

Aluminum – is one of the most popular types of metal siding because of it’s resistance to rust, light weight, and insulating abilities.  The downfall of using aluminum is its susceptibility to denting, which makes repairing difficult and time consuming.

Seamless Steel – are durable and does not require splicing during the installation process.   Also, they can be manufactured to resemble wood textures.

Other Siding:

Engineered or Composite – are made with wood products and other material to look like wood.  This product is cheap and comes in long panels that are easy to install.

Stone –
is the most durable and expensive type of siding material. This type of material provides excellent protection from outside weather.

Veneer – is a type of brick siding that provides excellent protection from moisture and temperature, but crack easily after many years.

Vinyl – are good insulators that are resistant to dents and other damage.  It requires little maintenance and can last for decades.
