How to Install
Stucco Siding
Stucco is an inexpensive,
durable, and attractive siding material that is great for
insulating both warm and cool air. If this beautiful
material is not maintained and repaired properly, it can
lose its appeal quickly. Here are some easy steps to follow
to apply stucco siding to your wall:
Before Applying
Stucco Siding to Your Wall
Make several test boards that
are smaller than the hole you are trying to repair.
Practice applying stucco siding on these test boards until you have
the texture matched. Then, put the test board into the hole
to see if the texture matches at a distance.
How
to Apply Stucco Siding to Your Wall
- Look at the direction of the crack in the stucco siding material. If the
crack is vertical, there could be a problem with the
foundation and you may need to call a specialist.
If the crack is horizontal, they can be repaired on
your own.
- Clean
the surface you want to repair with a chisel. Make
sure the surface is free of dirt, mold, and paint.
- Dampen the area thoroughly to prevent the new stucco siding material
from drying out.
- Make
the stucco siding mix. The mix should have the consistency
of soft butter. Add water if the mix becomes too
stuff.
- Use a
bonding agent to cover the area to be patched. Wait
until the bond is slightly sticky to fill the crack
with stucco siding material.
- After
a few minutes, use a straightedge to level the
surface. Remove any access material by drawing the
straightedge slowly across the applied area. Repeat
this process for other areas needed for repair.
- Before the stucco siding material has hardened, go over the area
with a wooden float to reduce the amount of cracking
and shrinking that occurs as the coating dries.
- Mix
and apply the last coating the next day. You can
follow the same procedure to apply this coat.
- The
area can then be painted to match the rest of the
wall. Remember to use primer specially made for
stucco siding for the first coat and then regular paint.
