Networking Q & A

What is a computer network?  A computer network consists of multiple computers that are connected together through a telecommunication system so that users can communicate and share resources.  Networks can be confusing and raise many questions.  Here are some answers to questions you may have:

Q:  Who needs a network?

A:  If you have multiple internet users at your home or business, having a network can allow those users to share files and information easily.  Having a network can increase productivity by allowing everyone access to the information on the server.  People will not need to spend extra time transferring files back and forth. All of the computers in your home or business can be connected to one printer over the network, saving you money and space.

Q:  Will having a network be costly?

A:  Networks are expensive to set up, but save you money in other areas.  You can save money on software and other programs.  Also, using a network can help increase the productivity levels of employees, allowing them to work more quickly and efficiently.

Q:  Should some computers be off the network?

A:  If the computer doesn’t require being online, then it should be off the network.  You can also solve this problem by having multiple networks in your company.  Each department can have their own mini-network if they do not need to share information with other departments.  This will provide security for sensitive data in each network.  If having mini-networks is a problem, assigning different levels of access to different users may be useful.

Q:  Will it be secure to have a wireless network?

A:  If you invest in a firewall, a virus-scanning program, and intrusion-detection software, your network should be secured.  Update them on a regular basis to ensure that you are protected from the newest bugs, worms, and viruses.  Remember to avoid using easily cracked passwords, to turn your computer off when you’re not using it, and to set policies about who can use the network.

Q:  Why do I lose my connection?

A:  There are multiple reasons for losing your connection.  Try checking your cable because it may be damaged and poorly connected cables can cause line noise.  If there is a problem with the connection jack, a technician can help you repair it.
