Window Repair Tips

Ever get frustrated trying to figure out ways to repair your windows?  Fixing windows on your own can help you save money and keep your home in shape.  Simple repairs to window frames, sills and trim pieces are easy to do and can improve the look of your home dramatically.  Here are some simple window repairs you can do on your own:

Window Repair Tip #1: Unsticking a window

1. Look for areas between the sash and window frame that have paint seal on them.

2.  Push the blade of a stiff putty knife into the joint to break the seal.

3.  If the window still does not open, use a hammer and a chisel to carefully clean excess paint out of the window tracks.  Be careful not to gouge the wood during this process.

4.  Use sandpaper to smooth the cleaned tracks and spray them with silicone lubricant.

Window Repair Tip #2: Fixing Broken Window Glass

1.   Remove the broken glass from the window frame.

2.   Remove all putty and fasteners that held the glass in place by using a chisel to pry it out.

3.   Apply new putty around the window pane.  To prevent the new putty from drying, apply linseed oil around the wood.

4.   Measure the frame to determine the size of the glass.  Note: It should be smaller than the opening by 1/16 to 1/8 of an inch each way.

5.   Purchase enough fasteners to be installed every 6 inches around the pane.

6.   Install new glass using compound or putty by setting the new pane of glass into the frame against the compound.

7.   To seal the new window, put compound firmly into the glass-frame joint.  Use a putty knife to smooth compound along the joint around the pane.

8.   Carefully remove extra compound with a razor blade.

9.   Let the compound dry for 3 days and paint the compound to match the rest of the frame.

Window Repair Tip # 3: Fixing Venetian Blinds

Replacing the lift cord

1.   Tilt the slats horizontally with the blinds down and make a knot.

2.   Get a new cord and untie the knot to butt end of new cord to the old piece.

3.   Tape the two ends together with adhesive tape.

4.   Pull gently on old lift cord to get the new cord through the slats.

5.   Leave a loop of excess cord for the new lift cord and continue to draw cord down through the slats on the left cord side.

6.   Untape the old cord when the new cord reaches the bottom rail.

7.   Cut off excess cord at starting end and knot both ends of the new cord.

8.   Replace end caps on bottom rail.
